On the corner of Market and Octavia on ramp, I have noticed there is a homeless man who is standing asking for hand outs. The first time I noticed him; I passed him and then thought to myself that I should give him some food the next time I pass him.
I keep snacks in my car due to my long commutes and I could spare a bag of chips or a granola bar to help this guy out. The next time I saw him, I was in my own thoughts and forgot to get ready for him, then the traffic was flowing the following time, and I was unable to stop to give him anything.
I had success tonight. I have a bag of triscuits handy. I rolled down the window and asked he if would like them. He was utterly grateful. He blessed me about five times. He even thanked me for my smile.
It was a good way to end my day!

Aww Jen. Good goob!! That man will probably remeber you since you pass him so much.
ReplyDeleteThose are the good ones who are gratefull. It is always great to make yourself feel good by helping someone else. I never pass up an oppertunity to help someone on the side of the road who looks like they may be in over their heads. I've even turned around and went back on the freeway to help a woman who had 2 babies with her to help with a flat tire. She had NO idea on how to relaes her spare.
And today I offered up Mikes services (lol) to this young mom stranded because her clutch cable broke in the parking lot at the Dr's office with her 3 month old.
Very thoughful :)
ReplyDeleteone time I tried to give food to a homeless person in SJ.Unfortunately, he wasn't grateful and yelled at me! Glad your experience was better.
Awww...I'm proud to be your friend ;) Doesn't it feel great when you do something that makes a stranger feel happy? When I was feeding one of my patients today he kept smiling at me, and that alone made it worthwhile!
ReplyDeleteThat was very thoughtful of you. I always feel guilty when I don't have anything to give. Every little bit counts. Even when we think times are tough because a lost job, etc... We should appreciate that we have a roof over our heads and food to eat.
ReplyDeleteThat reminds me of this one homeless dude that would always ask for money as I got on the freeway. One time he saw me smoking a cigarette, and he asked for a cigarette instead cuz I had no cash on me. So that nearly my daily routine after that...giving him cigarettes instead of cash. Hey, he's homeless, might as well do what I can to make his day go by smoother. :)
ReplyDeleteI've heard stories of homeless people wanting cash vs. food! One of my friends awhile back told me that she gave a homeless guy food and he threw it away! glad your guy was grateful! :)
